Operations guide

Prepare your fuel installation for winter

Review fuel grade, stored water and the complete dispensing route before cold weather disrupts the operation.

Practical guidance

Different causes can produce similar symptoms

Slow delivery or a blocked filter does not, by itself, identify the cause.

Wax and ice

Diesel wax can restrict flow in cold conditions; water can freeze and cause a different blockage. Ask the fuel supplier about the product’s cold-weather properties and investigate the actual restriction before selecting a remedy.

Fuel already in storage

Check the specification and delivery date of remaining stock before replenishment. A new seasonal delivery does not automatically establish the cold-weather performance of the mixed contents.

AdBlue equipment

Use the fluid supplier’s temperature guidance and the supplied tank’s heating and insulation instructions. Do not dilute AdBlue or add antifreeze to it.

Safe diagnosis

Do not use an open flame or improvised heater on fuel equipment. Stop using damaged or leaking equipment and follow the site’s isolation and reporting procedure.

Practical guidance

A pre-winter review

Use this checklist with the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions and the site’s risk assessment.

Seasonal fuel-site checks
AreaPractical check
Fuel supplyConfirm the ordered grade, likely lowest operating conditions and delivery contingency with the supplier.
Tank and waterArrange the appropriate condition/water checks; inspect accessible caps, seals and containment through the maintenance plan.
Filters and dispensingReview filter history, required spares and hose/nozzle condition. Have competent personnel check restricted delivery.
Power and protectionCheck specified heating, insulation and electrical protection through an authorised service route.
Site accessKeep safe access to the filling point, controls and emergency equipment in the winter operating plan.
Records and escalationRecord baseline delivery performance, service findings and who to contact if flow changes or alarms occur.
